1. RITA ORA’S WEDDING + PROPOSAL
Rita Ora amazes me. As a singer, she hasn’t had a proper hit in years. But as a person with what appears to be the best PR team in the world, she’s crafted a glamorous life for herself, always circling the orbits of wealth and fame. I will say that in the few videos I’ve seen of her during my “research,” she comes across as a lovely and engaging human. But surely it takes a little more than being lovely and engaging to attend the Met Gala?
A story came out about Rita and her now-husband Taika Waititi’s wedding ceremony. It seems that the release of their wedding photos was actually a marketing ploy for Rita’s new album. However, the part of the story that is getting attention is that Rita proposed to Taika. And I would just like to say that this is really not that huge of a deal. Judging by the way most of my heterosexual friends have gotten engaged, both parties usually know that an engagement is coming. A proposal is much less spontaneous than one is led to believe. In a more practical world, you probably end up discussing the realities of marriage and most importantly, nudge your partner towards an acceptable ring along the way. Basically, most of my girlfriends knew that a proposal was heading their way, so while it’s cool that Rita was the one to formally ask, I still think that an engagement is a joint affair.
Rita and Taika decided to have an intimate wedding in LA. Intimate weddings have definitely become the cool thing to do. Like with all status symbols, as soon as a larger part of the population can afford it, the status suddenly shifts to something completely different. The wedding dress by Tom Ford was very Rita, the veil was very beautiful and the cake was very millennial. These are all the thoughts I had about their special day.
2. PLASTIC SURGERY AND TEETH
If you’ve followed our meme page for a while, you know that I love talking about teeth and plastic surgery. The most interesting aspects of aesthetic dentistry are always the least apparent ones. It’s not enough to merely bleach our teeth into oblivion, there are other things to consider. For instance, one component of an attractive smile is the so-called “buccal corridor” which refers to the amount of space left between our teeth and the corners of lips. An article from The Practice Beverly Hills lists other aesthetic considerations in a smile including the prominence of canine teeth, the gumline of upper teeth, and translucency.

Here is an interesting article describing why Meghan Markle has such a beautiful smile: https://www.batemandentistry.com/blog/posts/a-royal-smile---dentist-perspective
(And no, I’m not obsessed with Meghan…)
Part of the reason why I’m so interested in teeth and plastics is that there really isn’t a lot of reliable information out there. Providers are inherently biased and magazines often get paid to promote procedures. The closest resource we have to honest reviews of surgeries is the website RealSelf, but it’s hard to make sense of the data they provide. What does it mean if 85% of people recommend a nose job? What happens to the other 15%? I’d be curious to know how you find reliable doctors and trust them with your face.
I’ve always toyed with the idea of getting something done. Should I get a cuter nose, or remove the buccal fat? Or maybe say fuck it and reconstruct my entire jaw? But none of the doctors I’ve visited inspired much confidence in me. If someone looked at Megan Fox’s face and said they will operate on her, then who in the industry can be trusted? And Hollywood is resplendent with stories of beautiful actresses who are supposed to have access to the best surgeons turning themselves into plastic-looking dolls.
